My Scribbling

After looking at Vince Low's work i wanted to give it a go and see how it went, yesterday after noon i spent 15 minutes with a 0.4 fine pen to scribble  a portrait of Morgan Freeman in my sketch book an i think it went well and i was happy with the outcome considering there wasnmt much attention paid to detail and and no effort to perfect or finish the piece. I was focusing on getting used to scribbling rather than carefully placing the lines to be photo realistic, to be more loose and free with the way i achive the resemblenceto the subject.

I will be doing drawing like this much much more and developing a specific style in some way unique to me and only being similar to artists like Vince Low

Vince Low

Vince Low i think is an incredible artist and i love the scribbling technique he uses and how modern it looks. The thing i like most about his work is probably the fact that they are extremely accurate and   how he lashes the lines out as if to emerge the subject in a background of scribbled lines.

Ileana Hunter

Ileana Hunter is an artist i've been looking in to because i love the style in which she represents the subject in her drawings, using a very minimalist technique yet keeping that realistic look where it's clear to see who the portarait is of. The images below are all by Ileana Hunter and they show what i mean, how the majority of the paper is white and only specific features and outlinings are shown with a lot of depth and contrast and the features and shadows chosen to tranfer to the drawing are picked very well to outline the individuals unique look and show a huge resemblance with barely any flesh shown on the drawing.

I am going to start drawing in ways similar to this and tweek the the style specific to me.

Warranty & prices

Pencil Portraits
All pencil portraits and drawings are produced on heavy weight cartridge paper and in turn mounted on a Daler Board frame. Standard sizes of A4, A3 and A2 are available and selected dependent on the number of subjects in the portrait. All finished work is given a coating of Daler “fixative” but this only a light protection and all drawings need to be framed under glass to avoid being damaged.

Acrylic Paintings
All acrylic paintings are produced on Daler Canvas panel in standard sizes of A4, A3 and A2. Landscapes are sized to meet your requirements and larger panels of A1 and above are available.

Prices
Prices are dependent on the size of the portrait and the number of subjects and are individually quoted against your enquiry. Prices start at £40.00 for a single A4 pencil portrait of a baby.

I undertake all commissions on the basis that I provide a product which is to your full satisfaction. In the eventuality that I do not achieve this, I will refund in full the price of the work on its safe return.

Rates exclude artist’s expenses for a specific project and VAT.

Day rates are for 177 paid days work for the artist per annum. If artist is likely to gain fewer days work, the day rate reasonably increases accordingly.

10+ years experience rate depends on external factors including an artist’s art world track-record and/or unique attributes, and other market forces.

Salary Basics

• According to the SimplyHired website, portrait artists made an average yearly salary of $36,000 as of June, 2011. This breaks down to $17.31 per hour. Another source, the Indeed website, provides a similar average of $37,000 for June, 2011. This coverts to $17.79. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics includes portrait artists in the "Fine Artists, Including Painters, Sculptors, and Illustrators" category. Those in this category made $29,440 in the 25th percentile and $44,850 in the 50th percentile. Combining the figures from SimplyHired, Indeed and the bureau, portrait artists appear to have fallen somewhere between the 25th and 50th percentile of the bureau's fine artists' category.

Pay by Region

• Pay for portrait artists varies based on the location of the artist. The Salary Box website indicates that rates across the United States ranged from around $35,000 to $71,000 in 2010. This represents a differential of $36,000 and an hourly rate range of $16.83 to $34.13.

Types of Portrait Art

• Portrait artists may make different rates depending on the kind of portraits they do. For instance, some portrait artists will draw your picture in a mall or park for just a few dollars. Other portrait artists do professional oil paintings based on photographs you provide or a sitting session.
