3D Class: positive & negative space

Positive & Negative space

In our second 3D lesson we spoke about positive and negative space within life. We spent a lesson using many different thickness', types and colours of string, tying it to and wrapping it around everything in sight, to every possible surface including tables, chairs and the ceiling. We did this to define what and where positive and negative space is within a room, we filled the entire room with a web like structure, so much, causing difficulty to manoeuvre even travelling from the door to our seat. It was a good way to show the difference between positive and negative space and challenge any previous knowledge of what positive and negative space is. The string had a unique way of filling the room and utilising all the free space, whilst technically not occupying much physical space at all. I personaly found it a lot of fun and an enjoyable task, although a great challenge to fluently move through the classroom. Some of us attempted moving through it in different ways like being tied together and moving as one and having hands and feet tied, to see how difficult it was to move with this added difficulty which was very fun and amusing.

We also had to transfer that positive and negative space to paper to see how interesting peoples interpretations were, we spent time recording, drawing and collaging on to paper the space from different angles and points of view.
